Here’s a recap of Qatar’s big news stories for the week up to Friday 24th December. Brought to you in conjunction with Marhaba, the ultimate guide to Qatar.
Starting with last Saturday when the Ministry of Public Health confirmed that the first case of the Omicron COVID-19 variant had been detected in Qatar.
On Monday the Qatar Tribune said that Qatar had administered over 200,000 COVID-19 booster doses. And Doha Metro ferried a record 2.5 million passengers during the FIFA Arab Cup. Doha Metro operated 50,000 trips during the tournament with a daily average of 130,000 passengers. Transferring large numbers of fans with zero incidents is a key achievement in terms of safety It was stated.
Tuesday and Qatar Airways begins legal proceedings against Airbus in the technology and construction division of the High Court in London. In a statement, Qatar Airways said, “We have sadly failed in all our attempts to reach a constructive solution with Airbus in relation to the accelerated surface degradation condition adversely impacting the Airbus A350 aircraft. Qatar Airways has therefore been left with no alternative but to seek a rapid resolution of this dispute via the courts.”
And the Ministry of Commerce and industry has seized toys bearing anti-Islamic slogans. This follows a circular that it recently issued on refraining from trading goods bearing logos and symbols that are non-compliant with Islamic values, customs, and traditions. The ministry said the inspection campaigns resulted in the seizure of children’s toys bearing slogans that violate Islamic value, customs, and traditions.
On to Wednesday and the ministry of public health says booster dose is effective in preventing severe infection from omicron. People are being urged to take the booster shots to stay safe.
Yesterday now and contractors reimburse 82.35 million Qatar riyals to workers. Payments were made under the Universal Reimbursement Scheme launched by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy to combat the illegal practise of charging workers recruitment fees.
Now onto this morning’s newspapers and the Gulf Times has; Qatar Rail announces Lusail Tram preview service from January the 1st. The first phase includes the preview service of six stations on the Orange line, which are Marina, Marina Promenade, Yacht Club, Esplanade, Energy City South, and Legtaifiya. And it’s Legtaifiya station that connects Lusail Tram to the Doha Metro network.
